YOUTH – INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

What can you do for Habitat?

Habitat Youth: The Habitat Youth program includes students from high schools spanning Hunterdon and Somerset Counties who have joined together to advance the Habitat mission by helping to sponsor and build a Habitat house   Students from each high school send representatives to meetings of the Habitat Youth Council, which coordinates build days, fundraising efforts, and awareness-building activities.  More high schools are welcome!   For more information, go to Habitat Youth

Construction Volunteer (16 years and older):

Individuals: Although our home sponsors are the first to be scheduled for Saturday work crews, there are 2-4 spots reserved individual volunteers. Youth ages 16-17 can spend a day onsite helping to build a Habitat house. Please note that an adult sponsor must accompany every two youths on site. During the summer months Wednesday and Thursday are open to youth and their adult sponsors. If you want to work with a group check your church or religious organization may already be working with Habitat---check in with your youth leaders to find out.

Groups: Your club, school organization, or other interested group can spend a day on site building a Habitat house. Each group is asked to sponsor the day with a suggested minimum of $40 per person (fundraising examples: hold a fundraiser or donating construction materials). Sponsors are then given the opportunity to schedule a Saturday workday on site exclusively for members of their group. Up to 15 group members can be accommodated per site, per day (8:30am-3:30pm), with one adult required per 4 youths. Please note that by law, the minimum age to work on site is 16. The Workday program is a unique opportunity for your group to give back to the community in a tangible way, helping to build a home for a family in need.

Site Host (16 years and older): Greet the construction volunteers early Saturday morning at the work site and gather contact information from them.  Stay on to help build if you want (16 & 17 yr. only). Minimal time commitment, 1½ - 2 hours on the weekend. Work as often as you like or just 4 times during the course of the build. 6-8 positions open for Girard Ave project. It’s a great way to meet our partner families and site supervisors and see the houses from start to finish!

Women Build Helper (any age): This is a great project for a Scout Troop or Youth Group.

·     Provide either goodies for breakfast, a full lunch, or just dessert for a Women Build workday.  Youth and their leaders make the food or get donations from businesses and deliver to the work site on special Women Build Saturdays.

·     Contact our Women Build Coordinator, Kathy Tanaka, kctanaka1@gmail.com

Habitat Home Helpers: This program provides several ways you or your group can help our organization and the Partner Families. To read complete information, go to Habitat Home Helpers.

·     Purchase and present a package of low cost, useful items to our new homeowners to help them get off to a good start (see Habitat Home Helper Packages for details).

·     Provide refreshments for a Site or Home Dedication Ceremony, special community celebrations for the dedication of a construction site and completed home.

·     Or support our work crews by providing refreshments, Workman’s Special or Window Washer packages for an on-site work group.
