Building a Home---What it takes

It takes more than a hammer and nails to build a Habitat home. The most critical need is to find land. Once RVHFH volunteers find a site, then they obtain building permits, select a partner family, and raise the funds for each and every home we build. Only when all that is accomplished can volunteers join together with the partner family to construct their new home.

Home Designs

Habitat builds simple, decent, “no frills” houses. Our basic home design is approximately 1,100 square feet and includes three bedrooms and one bath. The typical home has no garage, basement, or air conditioning. Depending on the demands of the building site, our homes can be one or two story, duplex or single family. Modifications can be made to the basic home design to meet the needs of a particular family (for example, to provide handicapped accessibility or a fourth bedroom).

Ranch Design

Duplex Design: Occasionally lot configuration, economics and circumstances allow for construction of a duplex unit. This provides an opportunity for two families.

Duplex Design with Basement: As in the case of the sloped Bernardsville lots duplex units with a basements are required.
