Outstanding Volunteers

The Board of Trustees of Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity would like to thank all of the volunteers whose combined efforts have enabled us to continue our mission of building simple, decent homes for families in need. It is with great pleasure that the Board of Trustees recognizes our Outstanding Volunteers and Business Supporters who helped to make 2010 an unqualified success.

Office: Tobey Wodder
Tobey Wodder, the ever-reliable office volunteer, whether she utilizes her creative skills to assemble our displays for speaking engagements and town meetings or pitches in during final stages of fundraising events, is always in attendance, full of southern charm and witty sense of humor. Six years ago Tobey started out as a Mailing Helper then soon after made the move to office volunteer. She has become one of a two person team that manages the Act! database; a task that requires significant handwriting deciphering skills and amazing attention to detail. Our office manager, Louisa couldn’t survive without her help and humor.

Fund Raising:  Diane Fonseca
Diane Fonseca joined the Spring Event committee in 2009 with great enthusiasm.  She has been a champion in procuring Ads for the program and soliciting auction items.  Her fun and determined personality brings in items and ads from all corners of Somerset and Hunterdon Counties and in the process, she educates the community of our work.  Diane also stepped up to the challenge of training our committee during one of our regular meetings.  Diane also volunteers on the Habitat 5K Home Run Committee.  She has shown the same enthusiasm and leadership qualities in her work on the race, working tirelessly to bring in sponsorships and donations with contagious enthusiasm.  Diane is a true asset to RVHFH, and I can think of no one who better embodies the spirit of our mission.

Site Hosting:
Janine Bisbee, Kim Curry and Kathleen Norris Lyons

Janine Bisbee, Kim Curry and Kathleen Norris Lyons provide a strong foundation for our Site Host program. Site Hosts often give the first impression of RV Habitat for new Saturday building volunteers.  They greet the volunteers, register them and complete the paperwork for the office.  All of these site hosts go above and beyond to help the Habitat mission, giving many precious Saturday mornings to be ambassadors for us at the job site.  In addition, this dedicated group has helped us build depth in the Site Host program by training new Hosts.

Janine Bisbee is a dedicated veteran Site Host who is always willing to help and has trained many new Site Hosts.  In 2010 Janine was a familiar face at the job site on Saturdays, hosting 13 mornings!

Kim Curry, who has been a Site Host since 2008, has really embraced the work of being an ambassador for RVHFH, hosting 16 times in 2010!  Kim has trained many new site hosts and often assists on Women Build days.

Kathleen Norris Lyons joined the Site Host team in 2008 volunteering at our Girard Avenue build with her son, Sean.  One of our veteran site hosts, Kathleen is dedicated and flexible.  We know we can count on her to train new site hosts and to fill in when there is a gap in the schedule.

Family Selection:  Kathy Weidling
The Family Selection Committee would like to honor Kathy Weidling for her many years of service to RVHFH.  Kathy joined the committee eleven years ago and remained a dedicated member throughout that time.  Even after moving from Hillsborough to Pennsylvania, Kathy continued to work with the committee, traveling long distances to attend meetings or conduct visits to numerous applicant families.  Kathy loved to attend House Dedication ceremonies - when watching the excited families receive the keys to their new homes she felt so happy for all of them.  The joy they felt was a great reward for Kathy.

In 2006 Kathy was asked to become co-chair of the committee.  Even though she had just received a diagnosis of cancer she agreed to the added responsibility.  She faithfully performed her duties while undergoing treatments - never missing a planned meeting or event.  Sadly, Kathy passed away on  April 20, 2011.

At her service when committee members mentioned that they knew Kathy through Raritan Valley Habitat, their response was "She loved Habitat."  That love shone through all that she did for the affiliate.  We will miss Kathy's dedication, leadership and friendship.

Habitat Youth: Siena York-Carr
When she was a college student, Siena York-Carr started a campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity.  In the fall of 2010, with the start of a new school year, Siena took on leadership of our Habitat Youth program, working faithfully with the clubs from schools in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties to raise dollars, awareness and excitement for RVHFH.  Siena’s flexibility and willingness to learn as she has gone along have produced a great result!  The energy and  excitement generated by the youth who participated in the Mr. Habitat event in March are clear evidence that Siena is in her element!

Construction Volunteers:
Gary Taylor and Rich Yessian

In 2010, Gary Taylor put in more hours on the job site than any other construction volunteer as a regular on our “A Team.”  Gary is such  a go-getter that Wednesdays and Thursdays were not enough; he often showed up to help on days when we couldn’t get a group on the schedule to build.  But Gary is not just an “all work”, type of guy.  He could always be counted on to bring a smile to every job.

In 2010, after volunteering for RVHFH for over 16 years, Rich Yessian retired.” Some people think of Rich Yessian as Rich “Yes I Can.”  He has been the “go to guy” for many construction tasks from installing kitchen cabinets to trimming out the home’s exterior  In his 16 years, Rich learned a lot and was always willing to share his knowledge teaching new volunteers and old hands alike. Our Habitat is losing a great volunteer but our loss may be another affiliate’s gain as Rich moves on.  He says he’ll probably be looking for another “A Team” to join.

Community Partner Awards

Local Business Partner:
Easy Closets—Becky Newman
Many of the businesses we partner with donate their product to us and some donate their time; Easy Closets does both.  Pieces of wood, racks and rods only become a closet system when a person takes the time and care to design and install them.  For over five years, Easy Closets has donated the materials and the time to create custom closet systems for each bedroom and pantry in all of our homes.

Contractor:
Matt Buckelew (IBEW Local 102)
In 2010, Matt Buckelew, a member of IBEW Local 102, committed to donate his time and professional expertise to wire all nine of our Bridgewater houses for the installation of passive Solar systems.  Matt worked with our construction team to plan the work for the solar installation and he was hooked on Habitat and its mission.  Going above and beyond, Matt has volunteered his time and skill, completely wiring two of our Bridgewater homes top to bottom!

“Star” Energy Partner: Solar Project
 Annie Kuster
In January 2010, Annie Kuster, a local high school student, came to RVHFH with a proposal to provide solar energy for one of our homes in Bridgewater.  When we told her we couldn’t provide this for just one family; we had to do it for all or none, this didn’t stop Annie.   Over the year Annie hit more than one roadblock like this in her quest to get free solar energy for all nine homes, but she was determined and committed.  Annie put in hundreds of hours working with businesses and professionals to obtain all the products and services needed to make this project a reality.  She began the project, in her words, as “an innovative service project.”  Once she met the partner families who would benefit that all changed.  She said “In such a heavy duty project, it’s easy to give up when one thing does not work out as planned.  It’s easy to forget why you
are doing it.  But it’s important to remember that, beyond the equipment and the engineering and the bigwigs with little time, there are people.”

2010 Donor Recognition Categories
This donor recognition program is designed to promote and honor our supporters in a consistent and equitable fashion. Six recognition levels were established. All donors are thanked in writing. Certificates are printed to sent to donors in the top five categories, and small gifts were selected to recognize supporters in the top three categories.
